I know enough of the world now to have almost lost the capacity of being much surprised by anything. I have learnt to understand what is hidden, what is veiled, what is dark in human nature. It is a solemn feeling, but not a depressing one, that I have come to after all my struggles that the best of us are but children, grown older; that the shadows which sometimes fall upon our path are cast by ourselves. And that it is love, and kindness, and faith in one another, which gives light to the road and strength to keep going.
